| Frequently Asked Questions |
1. Why Wockhardt Hospitals are renamed as Fortis Hospitals? |
Fortis Healthcare has acquired 10 Wockhardt Hospitals in Bangalore, Mumbai
(Mulund and Kalyan only) and Kolkata. These hospitals are renamed as Fortis Hospitals. In Bangalore now there are five Fortis Hospitals at Bannerghatta Road, Cunningham Road, Rajajinagar, Nagarbhavi, and Sheshadripuram. |
|
| 2. Earlier your nursing college was associated with Wockhardt Hospitals. Now that all Wockhardt Hsopitals in Bangalore are acquired by Fortis, what is the status of this college? |
Fortis has acquired three nursing education institutes (two at Bangalore and one at Mumbai) from Wockhardt along with these hospitals.
The college at Bangalore (more precisely at Yelchenahalli on Kanakpura Road) and the school at Peenya are now under Fortis Hospitals Limited.
Similarly the nursing college at Mulund is also under Fortis Hospitals Limited.
Fortis knows very well the importance of quality nurses in running its healthcare business successfully. These nursing education Institutes (and others under plan) will be the mainstay for Fortis for the supply of quality trained nurses.
|
|
| 3. When your hospitals names have changed why your college name still remains same? |
Colleges at Bangalore and Mumbai have applied for name change.
Before the name is changed a process has to be followed and approvals have to be obtained from State governments, State Nursing Councils and Indian Nursing Council. Once these approvals are obtained college names will be changed suitably to reflect the dynamism and ethos of Fortis, the new company that manages them. Till such time our colleges will be known by their old names ie Wockhardt Institute of Nursing.
|
|
| 4. What is the impact of changeover to Fortis on students and nursing college? |
| It is a normal change as happens in business and neither existing students nor any students in future nor the college is going to be affected adversely.
In fact if you take a closer look everybody stands to gain because of this new association.
The management team and staffs, who have worked hard to earn name and fame for this college, remain the same. Students get same quality education as before.
For students, they have now better exposure to clinical facilities and employment opportunities in existing and upcoming hospitals of the group.

|
| 11. Why choose Bangalore
when many nursing colleges are available in my town? |
First, unless your town is comparable to Bangalore,
it is difficult to say that job opportunities
in your town are at par with Bangalore. This is
a reason why you should spend time studying at
Bangalore and knowing the place and its health
care providers.
Second, here you will get a chance to meet and
interact with people from different walks of life.
This will help you to broaden your outlook, improve
your communication skills and increase your confidence.
All these traits will be of great help to you
in your nursing profession. Your home town may
not give you this environment or these advantages.

|
| 12. I am from outside Bangalore.
I want to take admission at your institute. Do you
help me in getting a hostel accommodation? What
will be the cost of food and staying in the hostel?
|
Many students
studying at Wockhardt Institute of Nursing are
from outside Bangalore. The institute assists
each of them in getting a suitable hostel accommodation
in a nearby area. Boys and girls stay in separate
hostels. Hostels are secured and hygienically
maintained. Variety of south Indian foods is served
and one is likely to find food of his/her choice.
Cost of food is kept reasonable by the hostel
operators. For the academic session 2010-2011,
monthly payment for the food and accommodation
at hostel is fixed at Rs.2,500/-. This figure
is likely to change every year as the cost of
operation is increasing. Please take this figure
as an indication of your likely expenses for staying
in a hostel.

|
13.
Do you cover the syllabus in time? |
Yes. At Wockhardt Institute
of Nursing academics are taken very seriously.
Teachers are advised to stick to the class schedules
and course plan. Students are encouraged to be
regular at classes. All these help us to complete
the course in time for the University Examination. |
|
14.
Do you analyse the performance of students? Do
you help weaker students? |
Yes. At
Wockhardt Institute of Nursing we understand that
some students are sharp but others can be made
sharp. This belief has lead us to develop our
mentoring system at the Institute. Our students
are permitted to meet their teacher to discuss
their doubts. Performance feedback to our students
is given periodically and in most encouraging
manner. The results are visible, students are
enjoying their lectures, class attendance is at
peak and overall performances of the batches have
improved. |
|
| 15. In
a field dominated by females can male candidates
make it a success in nursing? |
Nursing
is no longer the bastion of lady nurses. In last
five years the scene has changed and now more
and more male candidates are opting for a nursing
career and are being successful at it also. Female
nurses are exclusively needed in labour room and
maternity ward. Except these areas perhaps male
nurses are needed everywhere else. Especially
in psychiatry (where there is a potential of facing
a violent patient) and emergency (where speed
and a lot of physical stamina is needed) areas
health care industry needs male nurses. The male
to female ratio of nursing students has reached
1:3 in some schools/colleges and steadily increasing
as of now. |
|
| 16. I have
not succeeded in medical entrance tests. Can I opt
for nursing? |
Perhaps
the next best alternative to opt for is nursing.
Though both fields are different they have some
similarity and your background in biology and
chemistry subjects will be of immense help to
you. If you consider other facts you will see
that nursing has some advantages loaded in its
favour. It takes only four years to complete a
degree course in nursing. Compare this time duration
with the duration to do a specialized course in
medicine which is at least twice as much. Secondly
to complete this course it does not cost you as
much as the medicine course. By joining a course
in nursing therefore, you can pursue a worthwhile
career and start earning as early as when you
are only 21 years old. You save time and money
and enjoy a good career by opting for nursing. |
|
| 17. What
does a nurse do? Is the job profile really good? |
To give you an over view nurses work to promote
health, prevent disease, and help patients cope
with illness. They are advocates and health
educators for patients, families, and communities.
When providing direct patient care, they observe,
assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and
progress; assist physicians during treatments
and examinations; administer medications; and
assist in convalescence and rehabilitation.
Nurses also develop and manage nursing care
plans; instruct patients and their families
in proper care; and help individuals and groups
take steps to improve or maintain their health.
As you know now nursing is a very diverse
job. Not all nurses do all these works mentioned
above at a time. Job profile varies according
to the place of work. Also job profile changes
with seniority. Senior nurses are assigned jobs
that demand more administrative or managerial
skills like recommending nurses for promotions
or evaluating success of a new training program.
A junior nurse is usually assigned with direct
patient care
If you have not understood how a work setting
(place) does affect the nature of job here is
an example. Nurses at hospitals (place of work)
provide bedside nursing care to patients like
recording symptoms, reactions and progress in
treatments and help patient to recover from
illness. Public health nurses work in government
and private agencies, schools, retirement communities
(noticed change of work place?). They work with
community leaders, teachers, parents and physicians
and instruct individuals, families and communities
in health education, disease prevention, nutrition
and child care. Instead of administering care
to the individual, their mission is to enhance
the overall health of the community at large.
Here nurses play a role more of an educator
or “a change harbinger” than a nurse
as a care giver.
|
|
| 18. What
characteristics a nurse should have? |
A nurse
needs discipline, patience, responsibility, punctuality,
commitment and dedication to succeed in the profession.
The job requires a lot of hard work, stamina,
alertness of mind, adaptability to follow difficult
time schedules, ability to think in crisis, good
team spirit etc. Apart from possessing these qualities,
the persons willing to take up this as profession,
should be calm, pleasant, compassionate, understanding
and should have the instinct to help and serve
the needy people without getting sentimentally
attached.
|
|
| 19. What
are the career opportunities for me in nursing? |
Do you know
that more than 60% of vacancies advertised in
health care sector are for nursing? By any count
this is a large percentage and indicates the number
of opportunities available for nurses. As per
World Health Organisation norms there is a shortage
of 2.8 million qualified nurses in India. (TOI,
March 17, 2008) There is a huge gap between number
of nurses that educational sectors can produce
and what health care sector demands.
Not only numbers of opportunities are high,
the pay and growth opportunities are also good.
Several factors decide the pay structure- qualification,
specialization, experience and the place of
work. A graduate nurse with right attitude and
aptitude can start with a salary package between
Rs.8,000 to Rs.12,000 per month. Trained Nurses’
Association of India, a group protecting the
interest of registered nurses, is lobbying with
the Government to provide a salary structure
to nurses at par with some other government
officials. With this happening you can expect
further hike in salary.
Shortage of qualified nurses has lead to competition
among the employing institutions to attract
them. As a result nurses are not only getting
better pay packets. Employers are ensuring better
working condition and opportunity for on job
advanced training to retain and attract them.
These facts have made nursing profession more
attractive.
A compassionate, willing to learn and hard
working person is best suited for this kind
of job and if you have these traits then you
will enjoy and progress in this profession.

| 20. Is
it true that nursing candidates are in heavy demand
abroad? Can I go abroad after completing B.Sc(nursing)
with Wockhardt Institute of Nursing? |
It is true that nurses from India are in demand
abroad, especially in the US, the UK, Canada
and other European countries. With shortage
of nurses in these countries becoming acute
over time this demand is likely to increase
further. Depending upon qualification and work
experience the salary for registered nurses
ranges between US$ 46,000- US$57,000 per annum.
The best part is that nurses from India are
eligible for Green Card and enjoy same perks
as their counterparts.
Nurses are willing to migrate to these countries
because of the money, the quality of life and
for the training opportunities to stay ahead
in their profession. Health care industry of
these countries prefer Indian nurses over others
for their English speaking ability, skills and
dedication to work and adaptability to new environment.
It is a win-win situation for both.
First you need to be a registered nurse in
India before you can go abroad. You also need
to pass other examinations like CGFNS, NCLEX-RN
and IELTS. There are several institutes who
exclusively recruit nurses for US hospitals.
They assist and provide complete details to
nurses interested in migrating to US/abroad.
